Volunteering opportunities come available in the following areas: Advice,
Animals, Arts & crafts, Caring & befriending, Children, Committee
work, Computer, Conservation, Counselling, Driving & transport, Education & training,
Escorting, Fundraising/collecting, Gardening, Health & hospitals,
Manual skills, Office work, Reading, Shop work, Youth work
You might like to work with one of the following client groups :- Children,
Young people, Older people, Physical , Learning disabilities, Disabilities,
Offenders or their families, People with hiv/aids, Refugees, Women
Working with people with disabilities
- helping out at a club for people who have physical or learning disabilities
- advocacy work for people with learning and/or physical disabilities
- helping at a Day Centre for people who have disabilities
- making friends with someone who has a learning disability
- doing administrative work and generally helping out at the Shopmobility
Scheme in the St George's Centre, which provides wheelchairs and scooters
for disabled people
- being a member of a support group for people who have learning disabilities
- this could involve driving, befriending, fundraising, helping with
coffee mornings and quiz nights
- driving older and disabled people to hospital and other appointments
- assisting people with disabilities in sports clubs (swimming, football,
etc)
Ideas for Voluntary work that is available
Emotional Suport and Befriending
- advocacy work for older people
- befriending
- telephone befriending/telephone listening volunteer
- assisting at drop-in sessions for people who have mental health problems
- giving practical and emotional support to people who have been victims
of crime
- acting as a mentor for a socially excluded teenager
- helping at a Day Centre for older people, including helping to serve
lunch
Working with Children and Young People
- in holiday play schemes and after school clubs for children
- helping out at a local school with groups of children (for those
over 50)
- helping a young family who are having difficulties, by giving emotional
and/or practical help
- acting as an advocate for children in care
- mentoring teenagers
Practical Voluntary Work
- driving for the Housebound library service - taking books to people's
homes
- working on a conservation project to help improve the environment
- gardening for older people or people who are HIV positive
- helping an animal charity
- act as a "handy person", including maintenance of a building
or giving any other practical help to local people
- lay assessor - visting residential homes for elderly people as part
of an Inspection Team
- helping at a toy library by checking toys in and out and repairing
toys
- helping run stalls at fund-raising events for charities such as
Oxfam and the National Childbirth Trust
- shopping and helping with small tasks for older people or people
with HIV
Shop Work
- helping out at a charity shop
Office and Administration Work
- filing, general administration, reception work
Management Committees and Fund Raising
- serving on the management committee, ie. treasurer
- fund-raising for local charity (for people with fund-raising experience)
- business mentoring
